#33 People, cultures and landscapes. An interview with Giampietro Mattolin

Giampietro Mattolin is an Italian photographer. He's been travelling for over 30 years, always looking for the "click" in a travel experience. Some weeks ago we talked to him about Seven Days in project and he was enthusiastic about it. During the last weeks we have seen and duscussed toghether about many and many photos. A good work of selection, from whom we have created two success series: Desert Geometries Collection and Earth Heart Collection. Furthermore, we talked about his life and travels around the world.

giampietro mattolin photographerWhat kind of photographer are you?
I consider myself an "observer" using the camera to "freeze" moments, people, landscapes, animals I can catch during my travels. I consider the journey as the search of myself in relationship with "others". Be these people, cultures and traditions or nature, travel is an experience that helps us to grow and to understand the "differences".

During your travel are you looking for places or people?
I don't start from a priviledge position. In front of me there can be faces, costumes, rituals. I look for the opportunity to meet populations and attend their celebrations. When I start a journey, I try to close my mind to everyday things and open it to the experiences I will face, without any prejudice.

Do you travel for your clients or to seek your personal inspiration?
Organize and accompany clients for a journey is my work. Usually my itineraries have the particularity to try new experiences in wild places and in contact with various cultures, and I always come back home with a bag full of "moments" to be transformed into images, but above all to keep in mind as personal growth.

What is your equipment for a travel report?
Normally I fill the pack with two or more photographic camera bodies, various types of lenses, from wide-angle to telephoto zoom, enough memory cards, and all the accessories that will be used for operation of the camera: batteries, charger, accessories cleaning, "instruction book" because there is always something that could be useful. And I never forget my interest...

Where do your photos find their best expression: in a book, in a magazine or in a large print?
I have published two books, MUSTANG and HIMALAYA, and I'm preparing the third about the Tibetan culture. I hope to prepare soon a book about the desert (through the study of light and shapes) that I keep in the drawer waiting for the opportunity. Many articles and interviews have appeared on various magazines and my images are used as interior design for offices, shops and private homes. Their sizes are various, but if the prints are medium or large I think you can see better the image quality.
